Oral mucosal infections are on the rise due to many factors, including an aging population, systemic disease, the use of immunosuppressive drugs and with that the rise of opportunistic infections. This intermediate-level course appropriate for dental professionals, reviews oral bacterial infections that are not commonly seen in dental practices, as well as specimen collection and transportation, and medication management of these diseases.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the types of microbiological sampling methods used in oral mucosal infections.
  • Recognize the pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and management of bacterial infections in the oral cavity.
  • Recognize the pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and management of the sexually transmitted bacterial infections gonorrhea and syphilis in the oral cavity.
  • Explain how to collect and transports specimens from bacterial, fungal and viral lesions from the oral cavity and how to manage these diseases with medication.

About the Author(s)

Veronica Powers, DMD, received a BS degree from Providence College and a DMD degree from the Oregon Health and Science University. After working for four years as a general dentist in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Powers returned to New York City to serve as lead dentist for Phoenix House Foundation in Brooklyn, New York, where she provided comprehensive treatment for the residents of a rehabilitation facility.
