Mary Elaine Southard, DNP, RN, APHN-BC, HWNC-BC, DipCHom, is a national and international leader, educator, author, and clinician in integrative health and nurse coaching whose 40-year career has spanned varied healthcare settings and diverse populations. Dr. Southard is a national leader in nurse coaching, motivational interviewing, and patient engagement. She has extensive expertise in telehealth and the nuances of communication skills in this arena. As a psychiatric-mental health nurse educator, her research focuses on using the Omaha System in nurse coaching as a feasible tool to capture data for practice, documentation, and information management. Dr. Southard is adjunct faculty at Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and also maintains a private integrative consulting and coaching practice in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Barbara Shahinian, BBA, is a freelance writer and consultant specializing in content and communication strategies for healthcare professionals and organizations. She previously served as the executive vice president for content and creative for Gannett Healthcare Group, a media company dedicated to the creation and distribution of continuing education activities, professional news, and employment opportunities for registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians. In that capacity, she was responsible for companywide strategy, development, and distribution of content and marketing creative across print, digital, and social media channels. She is the former editor in chief of the print magazines and companion websites Nurse.com, TodayinPT, TodayinOT, and Nutrition Dimension.
